THE RENOVATION OF WATER BODIES SCHEME
A pilot scheme for “Repair, Renovation & Restoration of Water bodies directly linked to Agriculture” (above 40 Ha. Ayacut) in the district of Gajapati in state of Orissa is being proposed to desilt the reservoir bed in order to increase the existing storage ®ain the lost ayacut. The storage is also getting depleted due to damaged Head Regulator &damaged surplus escape. So the main thrust of the project is given for increasing capacity of the reservoir. Some minor amount has been kept for the repair of the canal system & improvement of the Diversion Weirs.
As per the latest guidelines communicated by MOWR vide their D.O. No 7-7/2004-Minor Irrigation dated 29.11.2004, a total no of 59 projects have been proposed for restoration. The projects so chosen has culturable command areas of 40 Ha. To 2000 Ha. & defunct or incomplete projects have not been included in the proposal. The cost benefit ratio of the projects calculated confirms to the planning commission norms. Further Gajapati district, which is one of the most backward & drought prone district of the state of Orissa, has been proposed for implementation of the pilot projects. The district is known for its agricultural activities. Agricultural sector accounts for more than 75% of the total workforce. But due to inadequate irrigation facilities &poor agricultural infrastructure, the poverty incidence rate in the district is too high & this district is subjected to continuous drought & flood, thereby hopelessly reducing it to the lowest verge of poverty. Hence the district of Gajapati is selected on priority for implementation of this scheme.
The source of the sum of technical parameters of the projects is the “M.I.Booklet” complied by the Chief Engineer, M.I. Orissa.
The total cost of the revised project is Rs. 601 lakhs, with restoration of ayacut of 3900 Ha. In Khariff & 2061 Ha. in Rabi and total designed ayacut of 11706 Ha. in Khariff & 2061 Ha in Rabi. The cost / Ha. of designed ayacut is Rs.5134/-.
